To me the skies are infinitely inspiring. As a photographer, skies are my favorite subject. I am always in awe of a beautiful sky, any time of day, any time of year, and in any kind of weather. In Hawaiian culture, clouds also symbolize thoughts and by that this proverb also means that the answers can be found within ourselves.

Sarah & Joey, saints and sinners

Names:  Sarah and Joey
Date of tattoos:  May 2006
Artist:  Dave Waugh
Studio:  Jinx Proof Tattoo
Location:  Washington, DC
Gallery debut:  2006 September 1st

Quotation tattoos are based on:
"The only difference between the saint and the sinner is that every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future." ~Oscar Wilde, A Woman of No Importance, 1893, spoken by the character Lord Illingworth

On Sarah's forearm is "Every Saint Has A Past" which has the personal meaning that even though one makes mistakes in life, it does not mean that they are not meant to do great things. On Joey's forearm is "Every Sinner Has A Future" meaning that regardless of where one is in life, every moment is an opportunity to better oneself. As stated above, each tattoo has personal meaning to each on an individual basis. However, the full meaning and perspective can only be seen when they are together. To us this means that while we each have our own individual perspective on life, the general meaning is the same. It is our Yin and Yang, our likenesses and differences.

Becca, by her own wings

Name:  Becca Orchard
From:  Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Date of tattoo:  June 2, 2006
Tattooist:  Joe
Studio:  Art in Motion
Location:  Medina, Ohio, USA
Gallery debut:  2006 June 5th

Quotation tattoo is based on:
"Alis volat propiis"  (She flies by her own wings.)

Becca's comments:
The quote reads in Latin "Alis volat propiis," and is in fact the state motto of Oregon (that, however, was not why I got the tattoo. I actually have never even been to Oregon). It means "She flies by her own wings." As you can see, it has a strong meaning besides that of a state motto. I have always been a very independent person, and after going through a very difficult time, I decided to honor that fact, and to remind me to rely more on my own inner strength. My very conservative mother went with me when I got this tattoo, and got one on the outside of her right wrist, her first tattoo at the age of 46!

Sarah, love of the earth

Name:  Sarah Caldwell
Artist:  Jared
Studio:  Blue Horseshoe Tattoo
Location:  Hampton, Virginia, USA
Gallery debut:  2006 February 14th

Quotation tattoo is based on:
"For the love of the earth, she dug deeper." ~Charlotte Tall Mountain

Sarah's comments:
The tattoo reads, "For Love of the Earth, She Dug Deep." It is inspired by the above line from the poem "For Love of the World" by Charlotte Tall Mountain. It is very meaningful to me in that the earth is everlasting and if we dig deep enough we will always find the strength to carry us through life's toughest challenges."
